The Birthdays of the artist and her favorite poet, Rumi, are in
September. September 30 is also the day that people in ancient
times believed the Devil came and crushed all the blackberries. Now
“blackberries” are special hybrids of cell phones and computers – not
delicious, delicate fruit that the Devil destroys at the end of summer.
Our propensity for symbolically naming our new inventions is often
prophetic. Or maybe just brilliantly calculated to give us a sense of
familiarity and our bearings. So the old, natural world is mnemonically
being replaced by the new, virtual world. In our times an “Angel” is a
push-up bra, “Miracle” is a whip, “Pledge” is a furniture polish, and
now a “Blackberry” is a device for communication.
