When there’s no place else to express your rage,
inflicting pain upon yourself is tempting. By hurting
yourself you feel like you’re making an exit wound for
all those trapped bad feelings that have nowhere else
to go. It’s a noble goal to not lash back when someone
says poison things or does something that hurts
you, bearing the burden quietly and privately instead
of retaliating against the perpetrator. But be careful
not to internalize these bad messages, and end up
hurting yourself because of other people’s toxicity. It
is their poison, not yours.
